Things to do in Rangeley

The Rangeley area has a lot of natural beauty to offer if you choose to extend your visit before or after the wedding.  Katy’s family has strong ties to the area, as her grandparents purchased land on Mooselookmeguntic and the family has built many here memories over the years, with many enjoying swimming, fishing, hiking, skiing and more in the area.  Len has grown to love the area to, and it was an easy decision to hold the wedding in the area.  We’ve dropped some ideas of fun things to do below, but we also encourage you to check out these websites for even more information: https://www.rangeleymaine.com/area-information/https://www.rangeley-maine.com/.

Bald Mountain Camps has their own page with activities that they offer here:  https://www.baldmountaincamps.com/activities.html

Scenic Drives
If you didn’t travel up here via Route 17, it might be worth driving up to the Height of Land for its famous view.  While we are past peak-foliage, we promise the view will still be worth it.  https://rlht.org/height-of-land/.

A longer drive with scenic views and a chance to spot a moose would be to make the drive over to Sugarloaf and back.

You can find a downloadable map of the local scenic byways here:  https://www.rangeleymaine.com/scenic-drives-2/

Hikes

There are endless hiking options in the area, and many are listed on the two websites in the first paragraph, as well as at the Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust:  https://rlht.org/.  Here are a few of our favorites.

Bald Mountain - our venue’s namesake Bald Mountain.  This was briefly home to ski trails in the past.  While it is a short hike, please note that the last part of the climb gets fairly steep and you have to climb up and over some boulders.  You will be rewarded with stunning views from the fire tower at the top!  https://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/bald-mountain

Angel Falls – a short hike with a stellar water fall when there’s been enough rainfall.  You will want a vehicle that can handle tougher dirt roads to get there, and will have to cross the stream a few times, so wear appropriate shoes and/or bring dry ones to change in to. https://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/angel-falls

Cascade Stream Gorge – this hike will offer you multiple waterfall views, and with some fun climbing segments along the gorge.  https://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/cascade-stream-gorge-trail

History

Rangeley has a deep history – indigenous history, logging, fishing and more.  There are a few museums in the area that highlight various parts of Rangeley’s history, including the Outdoor Heritage Museum, right down the road from Bald Mountain Camps in Oquossoc Village.  https://www.rangeleymaine.com/arts-culture/

Paddling

If you are interested in renting a canoe, kayak or more, there are various businesses in the area.  https://www.rangeleymaine.com/rangeley-paddling/.
Saddleback Mountain

Saddleback offers mountain biking, hiking and more throughout the fall, and offers good food and drink in their lodge.  Another fun option includes purchasing a ticket to ride the ski lifts up for view from the mountain.  https://www.saddlebackmaine.com/

Bear Tipping

Get right shitty and go bear tipping.  (Like Cow tipping but more challenging).
